Good Week

May 28, 2009

May 26th….Fishing has been pretty good this week….so far…walleye still a little unpredictable on this end of the lake. Lots of fish in the slot being caught ( over 17 inches with at least Four caught this week already over 25 inches) . Crappie are still holding up in the very shallow water ..with water temps around 55 degrees…several fisherman that come every year at this time went home after the weekend with a limit of nice crappie. Pete Ventrelli  (Retired High School Football coach) from Downers Grove, Illinois ( my home town) came up for his annual spring trip…his crew did great again…In the photo is his son Pete jr. with a nice Musky caught and released. They had several Musky’s hooked while pike fishing and caught some nice walleye in their four day trip. Had a party from come up from Georgia for the first time..they were out with Guides Bucky and Bill Rosner …had a good day with some keepers and several slot fish released. Both guides reporting walleye being caught are all different locations with some smaller fish still deep and the larger slot fish being caught along the fresh weed lines and sandbars.  Today we finally got a break with the weather and got to see

Crappie Gone Wild

DSC03365Memorial weekend weather was great!! Everyone got out on the lake and enjoyed the sunshine. Walleye fishing still a little tough…Even Bucky ( guide)  had a guide party out on Sunday..they got their limit but had to work hard for it…Bucky said the ‘eaters’ fish are deep 25-35 ft…with some nice slot fish in 10ft….Bucky predicts this week things should turn on for the walleyes…bass and crappie on the other hand have been going crazy..with what seems like every boat is reporting mult-fish every time they go out…all in shallow water.  Four muskies caught while bass fishing…they are in the weeds for the spawn…had a 45 inch fish hanging around the docks /spawing…several guests were shocked when walking down the dock and seeing this fish in only two ft of water. This week we have several groups of fisherman coming in…everyone of the guys have been here before and great fisherman…so I expect a good report at the end of the week…..

Water temps are coming up…walleye have not moved into shallow water..but a few real nice fish are being caught..like Dr. Fred Hermanson with a 27.5 incher…we also had a 26.5 incher taking right off one of our docks…and several other big slot fish over 25 inches. The fisherman this week are nailing crappie in very shallow water right up against the reeds.  Bass action is picking up…lots of nice largemouth being caught and released in shallow water of Dago Bay.Resort projects keeping us working long days…pretty soon we will be full and unable to do much outside..still painting, working on boats, docks, decks, etc…looking like a very busy weekend…resort will be booked heavy for the memorial weekend.  Last week Jason Davis from KSTP /Channel 5 in the twin cities ‘On the Road’ series..came up and did a story on Bella our Lab…people have called in and told him about the amazing things she can do…so we had her demonstrate by retrieving in the water, running behind An ATV at full speed, hunt in the woods, go up and down stairs, tracking a person walking into the woods, etc….I think Jason and Camera guy were pretty amazed  at what she could given she is totally blind…and how well she had developed a internal map in her brain of the surroundings of the resort…the story will be on within the next two weeks sometime in both the Twin cities and Duluth. We will put the dates and times when it is available on the blog….

OPENING DAY

May 9, 2009

DSC03341Saturday May 9th…opening day…we have around 50 fisherman that came up for the early season walleye. The morning started out with light rain and temps around mid 30s…kind of stuff that seems to allow the  cold to get right into the bones….only a few boats reported walleye catches…I spoke with a couple of Guides around the lake …some are finding walleye at lake inlets where there is a water temp difference from the inflowing water vs the lake temps…water in main lake is around 49 degrees…Black bay and Pike Bay temps around 51 degrees….water levels are up from the ice going out last week…expecting some good fishing when the water temps on the lake reach mid 50s…..one group staying with us this weekend..went into Black Bay and caught some nice Crappie yesterday.
